Southern Vancouver Island Camping

Canada's largest Sitka spruce tree (Picea sitchensis), San Juan River, British Columbia.  This tree is 333 cubic meters by volume and a 11.6 metre circumference base.  This is the second largest Sitka spruce in the world after the Queets Spruce in Olympic National Park, Washington.  
Giant Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) draped in mosses. The bark is rich in calcium and moisture adding to the wet rainforest plant community.

Solstice - Sold on iStock

Solstice L89 is an endangered male southern resident killer whale, Orcinus orca.  He was born in 1993 and has a brother Skana L79 (b.1989).  Solstice is most often seen traveling with his mother Spirit L22 (b.1971).
