Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW) Management

 



400 m - away from killer whales south of Ucluelet and Campbell River 
(400 yards in front or behind SRKW, 300 yards beside SRKW - USA law).

200 m - away from killer whales in all other parts of BC.
200 m - away from cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises) resting or with calf.
100 m - away from all other cetaceans (100 yards from other marine mammals - USA law).


1.) Swiftsure Bank - July 16 until October 31.
2.) Strait of  Juan de Fuca - August 1 until October 31.
3.) Southern Gulf Islands - July 4 until October 31 
(based on first confirmed presence of Southern Resident killer whales).

1.) Swiftsure Bank - June 1 until November 30.
Southern Gulf Islands - June 1 until November 30:
2.) West Side - North Pender Island.
3.) East Point - Saturna Island.


Stop fishing - do not haul gear within 1000 m of killer whales.
Less than 7 knots - within 1000 m of the nearest marine mammal (1/2 mile SRKW - USA law).
Turn off echo sounders - and fish finders when not in use.
Idle and allow animals to pass - if your vessel is not in compliance with distance regulations.

Alki (J36 1999) with her firstborn a son Sonic (J52 Apr 2015 - Sep 2017). Sonic was born shortly after Alki's sister Scarlet (J50 Dec 2014 - Sep 2018).  Scarlet was Slick's (J16 1972) fifth offspring.

World Bee Day

Actions to help bees:

1.) Stop using pesticides.

2.) Let gardens grow naturally and allow dandelions to develop.

3.) Grow pollinating plants:

(Heather; bee balm; rhododendron; white clover; cotton easter; purple toadflax; fireweed; primrose; milkweed; sunflower; forget me nots; daisy; lily of the valley; witch hazel; lavender; thyme; rosemary; mint; oregano; mustard; sage; geranium; aster; maples; berries; cherry; lilac; hemlock; willow; hawthorn; and staghorn plants).

4.) Create a bee bath (bowl, pebbles and stones so they can rest to drink, fill with clean water). 

5.) Keep a mason bee home in the garden.
